Cliffs of Insanity
“Look you see, The Cliffs of Insanity! Hurry up! Move the thing, and that other thing. Move it!” ~The Princess Bride
What you do while you wait throughout the adoption process may help you keep your sanity. I know other adoptive parents who decided not to have a baby shower until after everything was finalized, but the nursery still needs to be ready to receive.
This is why I started a while ago doing little baby projects. I actually signed up for Pinterest a few months ago (don’t judge me for being late). A lot of people have great or interesting ideas for every project you can think of. The best part about DIY projects is that they are customized to fit what you want.
We have chosen a theme and color scheme for the nursery, but that doesn’t mean stores will have it. This doesn’t bother me! I can sew my own curtains, blankets, etc. I can paint a shelf or make artwork to match our theme. I think this is the adoptive mother’s “nesting” phase. (Hint: let your husband do the building projects. It is his duty!)
Now I can brag about my nursery. One day I will post a picture of it too. Our theme is Star Wars! We are specifically using a Star Wars ABC poster by artist Katie Cook. We bought this poster at Star Wars Celebration VI years ago. The colors that we are using from the poster are blue, green and purple. We have many toys from our childhood which we were easily able to incorporate. I did collect the Star Wars Burger King toys when Episode III was out in theaters. I made grey wood grain curtains with an ewok for Endor. We have character containers from Disney’s Star Wars Weekends. I made a Star Wars comic book collage cushion cover for our window seat. I also cut out a smaller digital version of the ABC poster to use on the outlet covers. At the center of the room is a paper lantern of the Death Star that our friend Michelle painted. I just finished working on a hanging mobile using Hallmark’s new Itty Bitty collection of Star Wars characters.
As many times as I said “Star Wars” you wouldn’t expect the theme to be subtle, but everything is simple and cute. Our biggest problem is making sure Lilo doesn’t try to sleep in the crib.
“Tyrone, you know how much I love watching you work. But I’ve got my country’s 500th anniversary to plan, my wedding to arrange, my wife to murder, and Guilder to frame for it. I’m swamped!” ~The Princess Bride
